Silas: Back!
Me: Black?
Micah: Chocolate?
Silas: Yeah!

Kelly: You get to practice waiting.
Silas, while clapping: Yeaaaaa!

Walked into Kelly's house, saw a shag rug, immediately ran to it, laid down, and rubbed his arms on it: I wike dis.  I wike dis a lot!

Silas: I wanna cookie.
Me: Finish your food.
Silas: My tummy hurtin'.
Me: Do you think a cookie would make your tummy hurt?
Silas: No, it make it betterrrr.

Rubbing his nose on my nose...
Me: What are you doing?
Silas: Somepin.
Rubs again, really hard.
Silas: Somepin on your nose.  (Picks it off)
Me: What is it?
Silas: Smiles and shows me..."a boogie!"

Lots of yelling from other room:
Silas: Go!…Go!…Me no happy!…Go!
Me: Why were you yelling?
Silas: There's a rabbit!
Me: A rabbit?
Silas: Yeah!  In the (Christmas) tree.
Me: Oh!  Tell Bella, she'll take care of it.
Silas: Whispers in Bella's ear, "There's a sqwerl.  And a bird."
Next thing we know, Bella is running around the tree and two ornaments are on the ground.

Five hours later…
That sqwerl not on tree anymore.  Ran away to somebody's house.  On her tree.

When helping Micah put the crib together, he looked at me and said, "I makin' yous bed, baby!" (got that one on camera!)

Micah: Silas, turn your listening ears on.
Silas: schewwww (turning motion with hands next to both ears)
Micah: Testing, testing, 1, 2, 3! Silas, are your ears on?
Silas: Yeah!
Micah: What did I just say?
Silas: I don't know!

Silas is always busy working.  Notice his cell phone
clipped on his pocket, just like daddy wears his to work.
Love this kid!

Me: Why are you picking your nose?
Silas: 'Cause. There's boogie in it.

Me: It's already in my belly.  That's easier.
Silas: Oh...You need to take yours jacket off?

Silas' Silly September Sayings

This has been quite a funny month.  Or maybe it's just that now I have the time to write down all the funny things he says...

Silas, talking about Bella: It's my doggie.
Me: It's our doggie.
Silas: Our doggie? I share my doggie you.

Silas, playing with toy saw: I cut wit saw. It's me job. And daddy job.
Me: I can't do it?
Silas: No. You queen inside.

Me: Are you doing more work or staying with me?
Silas: More work. I see you in a minute.

Silas walked up to me and sprinkled imaginary dust on my stomach while saying, "pshhhh."  Then as he walked away, "For da baby.  Medicine."

Me: Silas, are you hungry?
Silas: Yeah.  I workin' all day!
(He had helped Micah repair a down spout and was finishing helping him pressure wash the porch.)

Silas, at dinner, talking about daycare: MYYYY Gabby.  (They are known to be best buds, and he is protective of her.)
Me: Why is she your Gabby?
Silas: inquisitive look, thought for a moment, then shrugged shoulders

Silas: You work do today, daddy?  I wan' work wit' you! Work outside.

Me: Are you going to watch the Bears with daddy?
Silas: Yea. Homework. Daycare.

Silas, when reading/screaming himself to sleep - "No more monkeys jumping on the bed!!!!"

Silas: Get in it Bewuh.  Pwease?  I askin' you! (to get in a pile of pillows and clean laundry he had made)

Silas, when finishing up a bowl of ice cream: I eat it all gone. It in my yummy. I hungee.

When watching football: They knock them all down!

Me: Did you have fun at church?
Silas: Yeah!
Me: What did you do?
Silas: I sing at church.
Me: What did you sing?
Silas: Nothin'.

Me: Are you feeling better? Did your nose stop running?
Silas, inserting finger in right nostril and then pulling it out to look: "No in here."
Then, inserting finger in left nostril and pulling it out to look: "No in here. Yep!"

So grateful for my little guy!  Also, people have been asking if there is an adoption update.  It turns out that the although his paperwork had made it to the desk of a state adoption worker, that worker was not at her desk for three weeks - she was at a training instead.  But she got back a week ago, so maybe sometime soon? Once our caseworker hears that it is approved, she will schedule the first possible date that the courtroom has available, which is typically three weeks out, sometimes two.  The way I figure, each day brings us closer!

I Si-yus Me

Yesterday at church Silas ran up to a teacher, pulled off his name tag to show her, and said, "I Si-yus me."  Just in case you didn't know. :)

Today I got a funny report when I picked him up from school.  An old teacher of his, from when he was in the baby room, came up to him, knelt down at his level, and said, "Hi D____."  He literally turned his body 360 degrees as if he was looking around the room for someone of that name.  Then he pointed his thumb at his chest and said, "right he-yuh?  I Si-yus."  That totally cracked me up!  Not only does he know who he is, he's got some attitude and humor.

So for anyone out there wondering if he transitioned ok to his new name...I'd say the answer is yes!

This Saturday Micah needed to work on a home project so I took Silas to the Children's Discovery Museum.  Now, anyone that knows Silas, or honestly anyone that meets him, knows within about two minutes that he is active.  I often hear the words "active" and "busy" from people as they describe him. Yep, I know.  I also know that he loves art.  This boy colors and draws and paints like nobody's business.  He actually prefers it to TV or iPad apps.  Oh yeah!  Anyway, he is typically moving from one thing to another, but on Saturday he literally spent 45 straight minutes painting at the CDM.  Painting includes spraying with water and wiping down the paint with a squeegee, and he quite enjoyed it!  See below.  Some day I'll post all kinds of pictures of his face, and funny videos (yesterday we got a great one of his making a huge mess eating chocolate pudding and saying, "Happy day, mommy!").  But for now, here's a strategic faceless picture that I managed to catch!

Life with this two year old is not always a bed of roses.  People often refer to the "terrible twos" and I don't like the phrase, but now I am hoping that it's true...because that means it will end.  Seems like there are all kinds of behaviors I could target, but in my job I've been taught to focus on three or less, to not overwhelm kids, to help them be successful.  Well, I picked a couple!  One is that he is often saying "no" when he really does want something, and "yes" when he doesn't.  It creates meltdowns when we follow through on the words he actually says.  I sat him down this weekend and told him that Jesus said to let your yes be yes, and your no be no.  I've explained it enough, and modeled it enough, that I think he gets it.  That doesn't mean he follows it all the time though.  He's testing us.  You say you don't want toothpaste and then you throw it...well, that means you'll have to brush with only water (sorry teachers, for his bad breath!)  When asked if you want milk or water, and you say you want milk, then you get milk, and can't keep changing your mind back and forth between the two.  "No milk.  Water.  No water."  Agh...but sometimes he makes great choices, and has the best laugh, and is a big helper, and says the sweetest goodnight prayers.  Seriously, when he requests to pray for a special person, or animal, or inanimate object, and then repeats our words to pray, I just melt.

It's worth it.

Kids make me laugh

Silas seems to add a new word to his vocabulary every day, and it is so very fun!  A couple days ago he saw the green light on the dishwasher, indicating that the dishes were clean.  Apparently he didn't want to see the light, so he covered it up with a sticker.  Soon after we couldn't find the sticker, and he tried to blame it on Bella.  He said what I believe is his longest sentence yet:

Did Bell-wuh eat dis ticker here?

He has also, on multiple occasions, said, "Bell-wuuuuuuh" after he passes gas.

Last night Micah was clearing the table after dinner, and picked up the cheese to put it away.
Silas:  Cheese, cheese, cheese!
Micah: We're going to have ice-cream.
Silas: Oh. Bye cheese!

Then, when he was trying to scrape every last ounce of ice-cream out of the bowl, and he was not pleased at the performance of his spoon, he said, "no work, no work!"

Today a clerk asked him if he wanted a sucker, and produced a little basket for him to choose from.  He had been holding a toy, but quickly handed it to me and said, "hold dis mommy" so that his hands were free to choose!

He has also really been into double pronouns lately:
I cheese me.
I toot me.
I some me.
I fall me.

Tonight on the drive home I started to sing a goofy song and in less than a second he called out, "no song!"

This kid knows what he wants!

He is also constantly asking, "what dat?"  The cutest one is this...
Silas: What dat?
Micah: It's my wedding ring.  It means I'm married to mommy.
Silas: Oh.

I have to share a few recent student quotes as well.

Student: It's floggy outside.
Me: Floggy?
Student: Yes, floggy!

3rd grade student: ISAT is coming.
Me: Oh, really?  (I know...boy, do I know!)

A student was picking her nose and eating it...
Me: What does it taste like?
Student: Ketchup and mustard.
Me: I don't think so.
Student: Pickles!

Not today

Yesterday I caught D bending over the radio, messing with the antennae.  I said, "D, what are you doing?" His immediate reply was "nuting."

Seriously?!?  So far he only regularly says dada, mom, mo (more), and dis (this).  So "nothing" was quite humorous, partly because it was a real word and made sense in the situation, and partly because I had this vision of him saying it many times in future years!

Today I asked him if he wanted more goldfish and he said, "not today."  What?!?  Are these real words he is using?  I think we have some very funny coincidences on our hands.

Can you tell I'm enjoying my time off from work?  Even though I did work some today from my laptop, and plan to do a little more on Friday...sorry Roger!  (Roger is the world's best custodian who tells me not to work at home - I listen to you most of the time Roger.  But I promise I'm enjoying my break!)

Stay tuned, who knows what this little barely one-year-old will say next!

Frowning birds

Today I was getting ready to read with a small group of first grade students, and the book was about birds.  I asked what schema they had about birds (what they already know).  And this was one response:

Student: When they frown it means they're hungry.

Me: stifled laughter, then..."I thought they had beaks, like this." (used my fingers to make a beak shape over my mouth)

Student: (awkward look)

Me: How can you tell they are frowning if they have beaks?

Student:  Their eyes.  When they close their eyes and give you a sad face it means you need to give them bread.

What is my name?

No joke, in less than a five minute time span today, I was called these variations of Mrs. Stickling:

Mrs. Stickers

Mrs. Stickle

Mrs. Stuckcream

Mrs. Stickaling

Mrs. Stickclean

Mrs. Stuckwing

Not one of these children was being onery.  They really thought they were saying my name correctly.  Oh, how I love the beginning of the year in Kindergarten!

You happy?

This is my sixth year of teaching, and from day one I have kept a quote book of all the funny things my students have said.  I hope to publish it someday because there are some priceless quotes in there!  Today I am documenting some precious moments, not all funny, just some sweet interactions.
A group of four students came to my room and had to bring their snack, so while they were eating they took time to look around the room, and saw our wedding picture on my desk.  One asked about it so I brought it over to the table.  One immediately said:
“You a princess?”
How sweet.  I explained that it was our wedding and one asked,
“You still married?”
"Yes."  How sad that they have to ask.
 “You happy?”
"Oh yes, getting married is a lot of fun."
Tucked in the corner of that frame is a wallet size picture of little D, so they asked about it.  “He in your belly?”
"No, he was not in my belly.  His mom can’t take care of him right now so I get to!"
 “Forever?”
"I don’t know.  We’ll see."
 “He happy?”
Yes, he’s always happy.
“You leave him alone?”
No, I was right there when we took the picture.  I was by the camera, I don’t leave him alone.
"You three only at wedding?"
"No, there were a lot more people at the wedding.  And the baby was not at the wedding.  This wedding picture is three years old - it's from when you were only two years old.  This picture of the baby is from this summer.  They are not at the same time.  This one is old."
Confused looks...such sweet things!
It's funny how they totally think "what you see is what you get."  If you're not in the picture, you weren't there.  And if you're smiling in a picture, it means you're happy.  But I am.  Next month is our three year wedding anniversary, and today I booked a surprise weekend away...I mean, he knows we're going somewhere, just not where!

Some of you  have asked about little D's court date.  His parents have court on Tuesday August 30th.  We'd love for you to pray for him, his siblings, their parents, the judge, caseworker, us...everyone involved.  I really have no idea what to expect, we are new to all of this.  Please pray that the truth be seen and that God's presence be felt.
